Valor Cup Season 1 Recap

A miracle run landed Wil New Era in the top spot of the recently concluded Valor Cup Season 1 Grand Finals with a PHP 400,000/RM30,000 cash prize. After losing to ClutchGuild in the PH National Finals, Wil New Era claimed the wild card spot as they conquered the 2nd seed teams from Singapore and Malaysia. They competed along with ClutchGuild from the Philippines, Tamago from Singapore, and M8Hexa.PenangFood from Malaysia in the Grand Finals.

The four teams will advance to the Road to AWC Qualifier in May 2018 which will determine the Valiant Server (Malaysia, Singapore, & Philippines) representative for the AOV World Cup (AWC) in Los Angeles later this year.

The Valor Cup Season 1 Grand Finals was held on April 7, 2018 at the Trinoma Activity Center in Quezon City, Philippines. The championship, hosted by Eric “Eruption” Tai and KL So Chan, was jam-packed with audiences from the ground floor of the activity center until the 4th floor of the mall.

The event began with the match of ClutchGuild(CG) versus M8Hexa.Penang Food(M8P). In Game 1 of the match-up, M8P was continuously leading throughout the game until CG made a heroic comeback towards the end of the game and captured Game 1 of the series. ClutchGuild wasted no time and annihilated M8P in the succeeding games with a 3-0 victory.

A celebrity showmatch followed with Caster Riku Quiapon and Celebrity Allyssa Mae Lao leading the two teams. They each picked 4 people from the audience to join their respective teams, much to the audience’s glee. Team Allyssa won the match in a dominating fashion. While in between matches, the hosts would also have lucky draws for the audience members who have a chance of winning in-game vouchers and gaming gear.

After the showmatch, the Grand Finals continued with the match of Tamago(TMG) from Singapore and Wil New Era(Wil NE), the wildcard team from the Philippines. In Game 2, TMG Ices’ Maloch almost completed the comeback for Tamago with a double kill but two members from Wil NE found themselves diving to the core of Tamago and finishing the game. This sent audiences out of their seats. Although the clashes were intense and close, Wil New Era took the win over Tamago with a 3-0 victory and sealed the fate of the two Philippine teams meeting in the finals.

Before the much-awaited grand finals between ClutchGuild and Wil New Era, Original Pinoy Music (OPM) band, Rocksteddy came out to play. They played several songs that had the audience rocking out. Rocksteddy’s setlist ended with their famous song “Superhero” that everyone watching sang their hearts to. Rocksteddy also premiered their new music video partnering with Arena of Valor.

The start of the best-of-7 match between CG and Wil NE sent the crowd roaring and cheering for their favorite teams. Fans of ClutchGuild were silenced when Wil NE dismantled CG in Game 1 of the series. CG fought back with 3 win streak and claimed matchpoint at Game 4. However, Wil NE did not let this break their focus and fought back in Game 5 and 6 tying the series at 3-3. Everybody held their breath as Game 7 started.

Both teams were already exhausted from the series but one last battle for the championship was all that was left. Going into the game with the momentum, Wil NE maintained their continued aggression towards CG and built a good lead towards the mid game. As Wil NE approached the last towers, Wil NE’s captain, Gambt, dove into the towers and led the final clash against CG. Wil New Era aced CG and finally took down the core and claimed the first ever championship for Valor Cup in the Malaysia, Singapore, and Philippine region.
